What Does Breast Milk Taste Like?

You Asked About Breast Milk and We Investigated For You!
It’s not weird to wonder what breast milk tastes like. Before I had a child of my own I remember my friends and I joking about husbands taking test ‘shots of milk’. They had all reported similar tastes when they did and curiosity led me to try some as well.
After producing milk myself, I knew there had to be something more to the taste experience. The Open Bobs BB team dove in to find out…
First: What is breast milk made of?
To learn more about breast milk, we first had to know what it was made of. Mothers make two forms of milk and they can both vary in flavor. Colostrum is yellow in color and is high in salt, protein, vitamin A, and white blood cells. This milk is far less sugary than its counterpart and is often made before a mother gives birth or immediately after. Known as ‘super milk’, this healing mixture is best for babies when they are first born to help boost immunities. It’s not uncommon for mothers to save as much as they can before birth to give to their babies.
Mature milk is composed mainly of fat, protein, carbs, minerals, and amino acids. This milk tastes sweeter than Colostrum but it’s good to understand that all breast milk can taste just a bit differently based on the diet and health of the woman producing the milk. Mature milk is mainly white in coloring and resembles the milk we find in the fridge.
Trying Breast Milk for Myself
When I first tried breast milk I was with a friend who was producing. I had imagined my exploration would come at a future time, perhaps tasting my own in the privacy of my bedroom much like some men might taste their cum. She offered to have me try and the taste was nutty and reminded me of almond milk. Sweet and not bad at all! It was not something I would pour into a glass and have a lot of…but not unpleasant and lighter than I thought. Granted, she was very healthy and did not eat a lot of junk food.
This lined up with the flavors and tastes that had been described to me previously and when I produced milk of my own, I had to try again. My diet was not the best during my pregnancy and there was more sugar in my diet than I would have wanted. I found that this matched the taste of my breast milk, which still resembled almond milk but tasted more sugary than before. During some days and times, it only tasted like sugar water, which is a common taste that others report.
What is the final consensus?
Those who have reported tasting breast milk say it’s nutty and sweet. Some people have even reported that milk tastes like sugar water, cucumbers, or honey! So, give it a taste, and don’t be shy. It seems the group consensus is…yum, not bad!
In the end, it looks and tastes much like other milk we are used to! It all depends on the diet and the health of the mother producing. Still, even the smell is similar to that of normal milk, just a bit more watered down in some cases.
